The Best New Product Awards is an annual awards program focusing on everyday consumer packaged goods products (food, health and beauty, and household). Winners are selected based on voting by real consumers who participate in an annual independent survey. Over 25,000 Canadian consumers participate in the study from across the country, making it one of the largest consumer surveys about new product development and innovation in Canada.

In addition to voting for the winners, consumers are asked to provide their feedback on a wide array of questions regarding their media habits, purchasing behaviours, interests, attitudes and much more. The study, which is provided to participating companies, helps provide marketers with valuable consumer insights in the area of new products and innovation.

The program has quickly become the consumer’s choice seal of approval giving consumers the confidence they need when confronted with “moment of truth” purchase decisions.

The Best New Product Awards was created and continues to be guided “by marketers... for marketers” and is meant to be a continual resource for marketers.

Methodology

The Best New Product Awards are based on an independent vote of real Canadian consumers. The awards are based on a randomly selected total national sample of over 25,000 Canadian adults, aged 18-69 years of age. Winners are based on a proprietary scoring system based on product appeal and repurchase intent among actual triers of the product. The results of the study are then weighted to ensure proper representation by language, geography, age and gender. The Best New Product Awards also has a Supervisory Board, comprised of media and CPG industry leaders, that provides strategic direction for the program while maximizing the learnings to the collective group.

BrandSpark International manages the complex project with the help of two independent consumer research firms. The mandate of the collective group is to ensure that the study is conducted with strict adherence to industry best practices.

The winner selection process is based on two simple criteria. A percentage of the Best New Product Awards score is assigned to the appeal of the product, while the remaining percentage is assigned to their re-purchase intent among only those who have tried the product on their own free will.

When designing the questionnaire and methodology, the following principles are applied:

  1. Representation of Canadian grocery shoppers by linking to the annual PMB study
  2. A process that minimizes potential for bias due to market share, distribution, company size, regional geography, and origin of the product.

Objectives of the Program

  • To serve as a seal of approval voted by consumers which can be leveraged by marketers on their own or by taking advantage of the numerous media collaboration opportunities with the Best New Product Awards media partners.
    • Consumers feel confident that they are listening to the voice of their peers who tried the products on their own and have given a “thumbs up” to the respective product.
  • To serve as an unbiased mediator between marketers and consumers.
    • The Best New Product Awards study is conducted by leading independent market research firms and assures that the best products are voted on their own merits.
  • To allow marketers to listen to the voice of consumers in order to communicate more effectively with shoppers.
    • Key consumer insights drive new innovations in the CPG world.
  • To enable shoppers to learn from other shoppers, thus empowering them to make more informed purchase decisions.
